The Problem with the Scale
How many times have you stepped on the scale, seen a number you didn’t like, and instantly felt defeated? For years, I tied my worth (and my mood) to what that little square box told me.
But here’s the truth: the scale doesn’t tell the full story of health. And chasing a number often keeps us stuck in a cycle of dieting, frustration, and starting over.
That’s why I’ve shifted from eating for weight loss to eating for health – and I can tell you, the results go far beyond the bathroom scale.
Eating for Weight Loss – What Usually Happens
When the goal is weight loss alone, we tend to:
-
Slash calories and restrict foods we actually enjoy.
-
Obsess over quick fixes instead of long-term health.
-
Feel guilty if the number doesn’t drop fast enough.
Sure, the weight may come off short term – but it often comes back (sometimes with extra). Don’t you hate that?
Here’s What Eating for Health looks like:
When the goal is health, the focus shifts:
-
Energy first. You notice how food makes you feel instead of how many calories it has.
-
Nutrient quality. Choosing meals rich in protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep your body nourished.
-
Sustainable habits. Enjoying food, not fearing it.
Ironically, when you focus on health, weight often follows naturally – but without the stress, shame, or restriction. Yay for that!
My Personal Approach
Right now, I’m paying close attention to how food impacts my insulin sensitivity (something that becomes especially important in midlife). I’m using a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) to keep track of my blood sugars and to investigate how my body responds to food. I’m also macro tracking which allows me to monitor my intake because sometimes we think we’re eating well, but in reality we aren’t. There are many macro trackers out there on the app stores, so find one you like and start tracking! These are just tools – not to punish myself, but to make smarter choices.
Some wins I’ve already noticed:
-
Stable energy throughout the day.
-
Fewer sugar cravings.
-
Better sleep.
-
Clothes fitting more comfortably.
These wins don’t show up on the scale – but they matter a whole lot more.
What Eating for Health Looks Like in Real Life
I’ve been preaching PFC for a while now- Protein, Fat, and Carb at every meal.
-
Protein at every meal (chicken, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, or plant-based options).
-
Colorful veggies for fiber, antioxidants, and gut health.
-
Healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, or nuts to support hormones and satiety.
-
Smart carbs like quinoa, berries, and beans – balanced with protein to keep blood sugar steady.
This isn’t about restriction. It’s about fueling your body to thrive.
To keep things simple and balanced, here’s some sample quick and easy suggestions to follow:

Why It Matters More Than Ever
As women over 50, our bodies are changing. Hormones shift, metabolism slows, and what worked in our 30s doesn’t necessarily work now.
Eating for health helps us:
-
Support hormonal balance.
-
Improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic health.
-
Build strength and muscle for longevity.
-
Feel vibrant and confident – regardless of the scale.
If you’re tired of chasing numbers and ready to feel GOOD in your own skin, it’s time to make the shift. Eating for health creates energy, balance, and sustainability – something dieting never delivers.
