Why September Feels Like a Fresh Start

September feels like the real new year. Kids are back in school, routines settle in, and the change of seasons inspires change in ourselves. But here’s the thing – this year, let’s not start another diet, or worse look for that magic diet pill (hello GLP-1). Don’t get me wrong, they have their place, but most of us just need a RESET, mentally and physically.

Why a Reset, Not a Diet, or a Weight Loss Drug?

Diets often come with:

  • Rules that feel restrictive.

  • An obsession with numbers instead of nourishment.

  • A quick-fix mentality that rarely sticks.

And weight loss medications come with a host of undesirable side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Rebound weight gain

While side effects are unpleasant, these drugs also carry some serious risks. GLP-1 agonists may increase the risk of:

  • Pancreatitis
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying)
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Kidney issues

A reset is different. It’s about realignment, balance, and long-term vitality. It’s giving your body what it needs to feel its best – without the emotional baggage of dieting or the physical downsides of drug induced weight loss.

A nutritious diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management, and creating a new relationship with food all play a role. Otherwise, the weight will just come back. While GLP-1 meds may have a place in some people’s weight loss journey, real change comes from making simple day-to-day choices.  That’s where a RESET comes in.

My September Reset Focus – Insulin Sensitivity

One of my main goals this month is improving insulin sensitivity.

Why? Because I recently discovered I am moderately insulin resistant.  This is a condition that can creep up as we age, causing:

  • Stubborn weight gain (especially around the belly).

  • Energy crashes and mood swings.

  • Sugar cravings.

  • That frustrating feeling of being “off,” even when you’re trying to do everything right.

To guide my reset, I’m using:

  • A Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM): Real-time feedback on how my meals affect my blood sugar.  Luckily there are many good ones on the market.  I will be using the Stelo brand no prescription needed and support on website.

  • Macro Tracking: Not to restrict, but to ensure I’m getting enough protein, fiber, and healthy fats to fuel my metabolism.  There are many apps out there to track  your macros.   One of my favorites is Carb Manager, or Macros First.   But understanding YOUR Macro needs can be tricky.   This is where a Personalized Nutrition Blueprint can come in.   You can get your caloric and macro needs customized and adjusted based on YOUR unique goals and metabolic profile.

What My Reset Looks Like

  • Balanced meals:  As a Nutritionist, I think I eat pretty good.  But just like you, things get tripped up once in a while.  And then one cookie leads to another cookie and well…you know how it goes!   So it’s time to re-prioritize protein, colorful veggies, whole grains, and healthy fats. Basically getting back to basic PFC’s (Protein, Fats, Carbs)!

  • Hydration: Aiming for half my body weight in ounces of water each day.  I’m gonna be honest.  This one is a struggle for me.  But like anything else, when I make my mind (the decision) I will follow through.  Just bringing it back into the mind!

  • Movement: Walking, strength training, and gentle stretching to keep blood sugar stable and muscles strong.  I’ve been doing 3-4 Pilates/Barre sessions a week all summer, but I have definitely neglected getting my steps in.  And strength training?  Well, let’s just say the weights are dusty.

  • Mindset shift: Measuring progress by energy, mood, and sleep – not just the scale.   I’m not weight focused in general, but when I don’t feel good, I know I need to change something.  So focusing on how I feel (and of course, the labwork I will repeat in a few months)

  • Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy:  The choice to take advantage of BHRT is a personal one.    There is a lot to consider which I have outlined in this guide

This is not about perfection. It’s about progress and paying attention to how you feel.

Small changes – like swapping sugary snacks for protein-rich options, adding a short walk after dinner, or getting an extra hour of sleep – can dramatically improve your health and how your body manages insulin.  That’s where I’m at right now.   You might be there too.  Whether you have insulin resistance or not, everyone can benefit from developing some healthier habits this fall BEFORE the holiday hustle and bustle.
