Blog
Raise your hand if you’ve ever asked Google something like this:
“Why am I gaining weight even though I haven’t changed how I eat?”
“Is it my hormones?”
“What diet actually works after 50?”
If you have, you probably have been left perplexed and confused by all the conflicting information.
Who can you trust? A dietitian? A nutritionist? Or someone else?
There’s a lot of overlap between the titles, and unfortunately, a lot of misunderstanding. And if you’re a woman in midlife, navigating menopause, weight changes, and hormone shifts, you deserve to know exactly who you’re working with—and what kind of support will actually move the needle for you.
Let’s break it down.
What’s the Difference Between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist or a Health Coach?
A Registered Dietitian is a licensed medical professional. To earn the RD credential, a person must:
-
Complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, or a related field from an accredited university.
-
Complete a supervised practice program (think clinical rotations—like medical residents do).
-
Pass a national board exam administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
-
Maintain ongoing continuing education to keep their license.
RDNs are trained to work in hospitals, clinics, public health programs, and private practice. They can treat medical conditions using nutrition therapy and often work alongside physicians.
A Nutritionist may have certifications, or may have taken or weekend course, or simply be someone that is passionate about health and wellness.
A “nutritionist” is not a protected title in many places.
This means anyone can technically call themselves a nutritionist—no formal training or certification required.
And there are also plenty of people online marketing health supplements and health products that call themselves “health coaches”.
In short:
All Dietitians are Nutritionists and some may do health coaching as part of their practice. but not all Nutritionists or health coaches are Dietitians.
So, Who Should You Work With?
When you work with a dietitian you are working with someone who is formally trained and educated in the science of nutrition.
If you’re looking to lose weight, balance hormones, and actually feel good again—you need more than a basic meal plan.
You need someone who understands:
-
The physiology of menopause
-
The psychology of behavior change
-
How to tailor nutrition to your unique stage of life
-
And how to support your whole lifestyle, not just your lunch
A Dietitian with Functional nutrition training (👋 that’s me!) brings together the best of both worlds:
✅ The medical and scientific background of a dietitian
✅ The root-cause, lifestyle-centered, holistic lens of a functional nutritionist
✅ The coaching, accountability, and habit-building that actually creates change
Why a Dietitian is a Smart Choice for Midlife Women
Let’s talk real life for a second.
At this stage in life, your needs are not the same as they were in your 20s and 30s. Cookie-cutter plans from wellness influencers don’t cut it. You need someone who knows how to guide you through:
💥 Hormonal chaos (and what to do about it)
💥 Midsection weight gain that won’t budge
💥 Blood sugar swings, food cravings, and energy dips
💥 Stress and sleep sabotage
💥 Emotional eating and decades of dieting beliefs
Working with a credentialed professional gives you:
-
Personalized support that honors your history, health, and hormones
-
Evidence-based strategies that go way beyond trendy fads
-
Real-life accountability to stay consistent and motivated
-
Safety—because some nutrition “advice” floating around out there can do more harm than good
What about Functional Nutrition Coaching- what’s that?
Functional Nutrition Coaching is about addressing the root cause of your symptoms. We don’t just ask, “What are you eating?”—we also explore:
-
How you’re sleeping
-
How you’re managing stress
-
How your digestion, mood, and energy are functioning
-
What labs and symptoms may be telling us
-
How to make change sustainable in your real life
