best foods for antiaging

We are what we eat.  Let’s explore how food can benefit the antiaging process.

Best Foods for Antiaging?

We can’t talk about antiaging foods without talking about antioxidants.

Antioxidants act as bodyguards, protecting your cells from free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can harm the body. They happen when an atom gains or loses an
electron. Electrons don’t like flying solo. So when unpaired, they roam the body searching for a spare electron to buddy up with. This damages the cells they steal the electron from. And over time, this can lead to oxidative stress.

Pretty scientific, I know.   But what YOU need to know is that oxidative stress is what causes chronic diseases including heart disease (currently the #1 killer for women in the USA), cancer, stroke, alzheimers, arthritis, alzheimers, and chronic inflammation to name a few.

This is where antioxidants come in.    Antioxidants are substances that donate an electron to the free radical and prevents cellular damage.  This stabilizes them so they don’t go around damaging our healthy cells.

Lots of things cause free radicals to be present in our body- smoking, pollution, chemicals, a poor diet, the UV light, chronic stress, certain medications, and even natural processes like digestion!
You can’t avoid them altogether, but you can boost your intake of antioxidants to combat harmful free radicals.

Antioxidant Rich Foods

You can eat your antioxidants by increasing your intake of antioxidant rich foods like blueberries, cranberries, blackberries, strawberries, dark leafy greens, gogi berries, kidney beans, and dark chocolate.   There are also many spices that are rich in antioxidants, including cinnamon, cloves, allspice, peppermint, oregano, rosemary, tumeric, sage, and many others.

Benefits of Eating Antioxidants

There are so many benefits to eating your antioxidants including:

  • reducing wrinkles (yay!) and improving skin elasticity by enhancing collagen production naturally.
  • protect the skin from damage caused by UV rays and pollution, which can lead to premature aging and skin cancers.
  • preventing chronic disease- can especially improve your heart health by reducing inflammation and preventing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
  • Certain antioxidants, like vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene, can lower the risk of certain types of cancer by protecting cells from DNA damage.
  • Antioxidants such as vitamin C and zinc boost the immune system
  • Improves brain and gut health
